Driving in Luxembourg

Key rules, regulations and things to know

Driving: Drive on the right and overtake on the left.

Speed limits: Motorway 130 km/h - Open Road 90 km/h - Town 50 km/h. If you speed or cause other traffic offences you will be subject to on the spot fines.

Luxembourg is a very small country and it does not take too long to drive through it. Diesel fuel prices (and sometimes petrol) are normally a lot lower than other countries. Before setting off check them out HERE

Seat belts must be worn in the front and rear. Children under 12 or 1.5 metres tall cannot travel in the front unless they use a proper child restraint system/ booster seat. Children under 3 in the rear must use a proper child restrain/ booster /child seat.

Safety Equipment: Reflective vests/jackets are now compulsory so are Warning triangles, however a Fire extinguisher and First-aid kit are advised, but not compulsory at the moment.

Driving Age: The minimum driving age is 18yrs Minimum Driving Ages European Countries - Here Check with your car rental company about the minimum and maximum age to hire a car

Motorway Tolls: There are no tolls on the autoroutes in Luxembourg, like in neighbouring Germany and Belgium.

Drink and Driving: Blood alcohol limit is 0.08 More information Here

Mobile Phones: The use of mobile telephones while driving is against the law in Luxcembourg. The fine for breaking this law is expensive. As in most countries where this rule applies, if you need to use your mobile phone while you are driving, stop your car in a designated parking area (not hard shoulders of motorways / autoroutes) and then use it. Alternatively don't risk using one as you can receive a heavy fine in most countries and more important cause a serious accident.

Disabled Parking: The Blue Badge is recognised in all European countries - More information Here

Drink Drive Laws - Examples of what can be drunk at present

It is not a lot and in some countries even to drink the glass on the right would be breaking the law if you drove afterwards in others a sip would be too much see "Wine" below

"Wine - even a sip will send you over the limit and invalidate your insurance in Parkistan, Cuba, Indonesia, Romania, Jordan and Nigeria, according to Rhinocarhire.com which produces a comprehensive guide." The A to Z of car hire - The Independent - August 2010

See this guide for further information

Finally, Don’t forget your excess cover and buy it before you set off

Excess charges could cost you up to £1,000 or more. Protect yourself by organising your insurance4carrental car hire insurance before you head to Europe.
