Renting a car can sometimes be a little confusing and is tossed about with many twists and turns.

To help you, we have put a glossary, which we hope, will help with your next rental car booking.

Additional Drivers: In addition to the main driver, registered and listed on the lease. May an additional fee for additional drivers, depending on the manufacturer.

Additional Liability Insurance (ALI): Provides additional protection for bodily injury or death, property damage.

Airport fee: Batch application of airport terminal and authorities for terminal locations. In most cases, this additional fee Fees, such as a road-related fees, fuel option, not paying child seat rental etc in the room price and are at the bar.

Collision Damage Waiver - (CDW): Covers the rental vehicle with accident damage to the rental vehicle other than theft or attempted theft. An excess usually applies and the amount will vary depending on the country and fetch / or vehicle type.

Excess Reduction (ER): Free Optional offered by the rental car to reduce or eliminate the deductible in case of damage in the event of insurance claim against damage or theft.

Deductible: The amount the customer is responsible for damage in the event the rental vehicle is (whether the driver is at fault or not) or stolen.

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW): covers the rental vehicle in case of accidental damage and theft. An excess usually applies and the amount will vary depending on the country pick up and / or vehicle type. In the USA, the cost of CDW/LDW varies from state to state, but is typically $9-$18 per day for normal cars (as at Dec-98), with the least expensive CDW/LDW rate applying in California where it is limited by law to $9 per day (as at Dec-98).

Higher rates may apply with special vehicles. Much higher CDW/LDW rates apply for RV's (recreational vehicles, i.e. motorhomes). Some Gold Cards issued in the USA and Canada cover the cost of CDW/LDW when used to purchase car rental in the USA and Canada. Unfortunately Gold Cards issued in the UK do not have this feature.

A one Way Fee: This fee is levied to cover the site costs of returning the vehicle back to the origin. In Australia and USA, possibly additional charges between cities within the same application state and renting between states. Some countries charge fees for a single journey between the airport and downtown locations within the same city.

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI): Covers the driver and additional passengers in the car for personal and bodily injuries caused in an accident.

Personal Effects Protection (PEP): - PEP insures against all risks of physical loss or damage to the insured property from any external cause, except as excluded, during the rental period of the vehicle. The maximum coverage for each covered individual during the rental period is US $600 (US $500 in New York) and CA $500 in Canada, after a deductible of US $25 / CA $50 per covered claim. The maximum coverage for all individuals during the rental period is $1,800 in the U.S. ($1,500 in New York and Canada) after application of all deductibles

Cover is provided for: A: The person signing the Rental Agreement (renter), and B: Members of the immediate family traveling with the renter, and who are permanently residing in the same household.

Premium Location Surcharge / Location Service Charge: Charge applied by car hire at selected locations, downtown and train station. This additional Items are also the airport fee. In most cases, this fee and additional fees, such as a road-related fees, fuel option, child Rent etc, which are not included in the daily rate and paid at the counter.

Rental Period: your car rental starts when you pick up your rental car and ends when you stop it. Rental periods are based on 24 hours from the time periods to collect – for example, is from 9 clock on a Friday clock at 9 am the following day charged as a day rental.

Sealed Road: A road tar sealed with a hard material such as asphalt or concrete.

Deposit: Amount frozen on the customer's credit card at the time of the survey. The amount is usually frozen in the full insurance excess amount. However, if a deduction is not applicable or the full surplus then is perhaps not an amount for incidental expenses such as fuel-binding, are optional fees, loss of keys etc. frozen frozen.

Senior Driver Surcharge: pay extra to senior drivers to and / or between a certain age.

Vehicle Condition Report (VCR): Essential to check the car before you sign this document, if you are unable to do report any damage you find by phone or returning as soon as you find it, not waiting till you return the car - More information here

Young Driver Add: to pay extra charge young drivers under a certain age.
